Design Elements to Consider When Creating Your Next Sign or Advertisement

According to Walker-Smith, the average person encounters around 5,000 advertisements a day.

That's crazy! With such large amounts of advertising bombarding our vision, it's important for companies to make themselves stick out from the crowd. Here are a few tips and pointers on how to design the best signs and advertisements for your company.

Color: Did you know that there are a variety of studies that have been conducted on how certain colors effect peoples moods and shopping trends? In general you want to choose colors that correlate with your business. For example, yellow is often considered a calming, soft color so being a personal trainer you probably don't want to go with this color, you want something strong and empowering such as red. Also, be sure to use colors that contrast well. Putting dark blue text on a light blue background may make the text difficult to read, if you're going to go with a monochrome color scheme consider using white outlines on text in order to make it pop. While you want your colors to stick out, you don't want to overwhelm the viewer's eyes. Using too many colors or ones that clash may make the sign difficult to read.

Text: Most companies default on block text in a solid color, this makes you blend in with the rest! Be sure to choose a font that is easy to read, yet has a little character to it. Going back to the personal trainer example, you're not going to want to use a fancy free flowing script, that just doesn't go! You'd be better off with something bold and strong, clean cut looking.

The amount of text you include on a sign should be limited as well. You don't need your name, email, phone number, address, blood type, birthday and everything else on your sign. Keep it simple with your business name or logo, basic contact info and possible a short slogan. This leads in to my next point of less is more.

The whole point of creating a sign is to draw in customers. Now think about this, if you are in the market for a new tv and you see a sign for a huge TV sale, 50% off select models, you're going to be intrigued and go in the store to see if they have what you want. This gives the business an opportunity to sell you something you may not have originally thought you wanted. On the other hand, if the sign listed all the televisions available, prices, discounts, features, pretty much anything, you'd have no need to go into the store unless they had exactly what you were looking for. You have no need to acquire further information.

Finally Images/Graphics: Graphics are a great way to grab customers attention. Whether it's just a logo or clipart, be sure to use a high quality image. Most print companies will notify you if your image size is insufficient, but a small picture can result in a pix-elated mess once it is blown up to fit your sign. Similar to color and text, don't overwhelm the viewer. Keep images simple and relevant. You don't need to show off all your products/services, just highlight the best sellers or ones you're trying to muster up business for.

Take all these tips and pointers into consideration and you'll be sure to end up with a great sign that'll bring in customers for years to come!
